El Chaltén, a picturesque mountain village in Patagonia, is a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts, backpackers, and hikers. Established in the 1980s, this village of around 1,000 residents has earned its reputation as Argentina’s trekking capital. Its iconic trails, such as Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, lead to breathtaking landscapes that will leave you in awe. In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know about hiking in El Chaltén, including essential tips, the best trails, and how to make the most of your trip. Plus, stick around for a bonus tip at the end!
By Plane and Bus: The easiest way to reach El Chaltén is by flying to El Calafate from Buenos Aires or Santiago de Chile. From there, buses run regularly to El Chaltén.
By Car: Renting a car is a popular choice, especially for travelers with limited time. We rented ours in Punta Arenas, Chile, and drove to El Chaltén. Be aware that El Chaltén’s only petrol station may run out of fuel—arrive with a full tank and carry cash for payment. We rented in car in Punta Arenas and you can find more information about renting a car in Patagonia in our other article.
By Hitchhiking: This is a common and safe way to travel in Patagonia. It’s an adventurous alternative if you’re on a budget.
When to Visit El Chaltén
The best time to visit is during Patagonia’s summer (December to February). During this period, trails are clear of snow, and temperatures are more favorable for hiking. However, the weather in Patagonia is notoriously unpredictable—be prepared for strong winds, sudden rain, and chilly nights.
We visited El Chaltén from January 29 to February 1 and experienced two cloudy days with strong winds. Evening temperatures at the campsite dropped to around 0°C (32°F), while temperatures in the village stayed around 8°C (46°F). Pack accordingly to stay warm and comfortable during your adventure!

Laguna Torre is one of the two must-see trails when hiking El Chaltén. You can do it as a day hike or pair it with the Laguna de Los Tres Hike (33 km) for a 2-day adventure, as we did. The trail takes you through the valley of Río Fitz Roy, leading to the stunning Laguna Torre, nestled at the base of Cerro Torre with icebergs floating in the glacial lake.
Trailhead: Start at Sendero a la Laguna Torre (near the village). Limited parking is available, so arrive early to secure a spot.
Trail Overview:
The first section climbs steeply to Mirador Margarita, offering spectacular views.
The remainder of the hike is a more gradual and mostly flat trek through the valley, leading to Campo de Agostini and finally to Mirador del Cerro Torre. Here, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the lagoon, the majestic Cerro Torre, and surrounding glaciers.
If conditions allow, you can extend the hike to Mirador Maestri, a viewpoint offering an even closer look at Cerro Torre. However, we don’t recommend this section during poor weather or high winds, as it can be challenging and exposed.
Note: At the time of writing, camping spots for Laguna Torre and Fitz Roy are first-come, first-served, and no prior reservation is required.
2. Laguna De Los Tres (FITZ ROY)

Begin with a moderate uphill climb to the Mirador Río de las Vueltas, offering panoramic views of the river valley.
Continue to Laguna Capri, where the trail flattens out, allowing you to enjoy views of Fitz Roy from a distance.
The final 1 km ascent to Laguna de Los Tres is the toughest section, with a steep and rocky climb. Take breaks as needed and prepare for strong winds at the top.
At the lagoon, enjoy the breathtaking views of Fitz Roy and its surrounding peaks. For a unique perspective, follow the trail (800m) along the lake to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Lago Sucia below.

The trail begins with a gentle incline, leading to a flat section through a forest, before arriving at the lagoon.

Spend time soaking in the iconic view of Fitz Roy and, if time allows, head to the left side of the lagoon for a panoramic vista over Lago Sucia.
Return to Campamento Poincenot to overnight if time permits or continue hiking back to El Chaltén.

After enjoying this magical moment, pack up your campsite and begin your descent to El Chaltén. Depending on your pace, you’ll arrive in time to reward yourself with a hearty meal and a local Patagonian beer.
You can do this also in the opposite way starting with Laguna de Los Tres and then continuing to Laguna Torres. It depeds on your preferences. Here you can find the maps of the entire trail.
